Jonah Hauer-King’s vintage Omega Seamaster De Ville
As much as we love a bold new complication or a dazzling entry into a watchmaker’s storied catalogue, sometimes it’s nice to see a great, old school, elegant dress watch, which is exactly what actor Jonah Hauer-King went for during his Wimbledon appearance. Omega’s 18k Seamaster De Ville dates back to the ’60s, with an era-appropriate 18k gold, 34mm case, a pleasingly uncluttered dial, and a simple brown leather strap. The De Ville line was conceived as a more understated addition to Omega’s legendary Seamaster line. Some things just get better with time.
Tom Ackerley’s Vacheron Constantin Jump Hour Retrograde “Saltarello”
Film producer and Mr Margot Robbie, it turns out Tom Ackerley really knows his watches, taking to the stands in a beautiful and highly unusual Vacheron Constantin, the Jump Hour Retrograde, which launched in 1997 and was originally limited to just 200 pieces. The 18k gold ‘cushioned’ case features unusual ‘retrograde’ and ‘jumping hour’ movements. Without getting too bogged down in minutiae, instead of telling time in a traditional way, with hour and minute hands, a jumping hand uses an aperture to show the hour, while the retrograde dial slides up to 60 minutes, before returning to zero at the end of each hour. Basically, it’s a rare, strange and impeccably engineered bit of horology. A highlight from the Championships.

When he’s not jumping off buildings, doing a slightly terrifying smile, or reviving the contemporary blockbuster industry, Tom Cruise likes to watch a bit of tennis. In town for the latest showdown between Djokovic and Alcaraz, Cruise, aviators on, of course, was rocking a classic Rolex with a bit of razzle dazzle: a simple (in a luxury kind of way) day-date in platinum, with a 40mm case and baguette cut diamonds sprinkled around the bezel.

A second Wimbledon in a row, a dismantling of his rival and the statistical GOAT, oh, and Spain won the Euros, Carlos Alcaraz had a pretty good weekend, collecting his fourth Grand Slam and, as is tradition at this point, lifting the trophy in a grail-level Rolex. For this year’s victory Carlitos went with a statement Daytona in yellow gold with an intricate meteorite dial and a rubber strap. As one of the brand’s biggest ambassadors, it’s safe to say the 21-year-old probably has a few rare pieces in his collection, but it seems to be the gold Daytona that is his current favourite. Don’t mess with a winning formula and all that.
