Windows 95 turned 28 years old in August 2023. One of the most-popular version of Microsoft operating system Windows, it has quite a fan following. There are many who go all nostalgic about the OS and how it changed the PC industry. It turns out a piece of that history is still around, and it’s in mint condition.
While official support for Windows 95 ended in 2001, a new memento has emerged: Windows 95 copy from the launch day. This unopened and shrink-wrapped relic can be a treasure trove for collectors and a reminder of a bygone era.
Brad Silverberg, a former Microsoft executive who played a key role in developing and launching Windows 95, shared the pctures of the same in a post on X, formerly Twitter. Silverberg clearly couldn’t resist holding onto this piece of history – the first copy, produced on July 14, 1995, contained a whopping 13 floppy disks for the then-revolutionary operating system.
A photo of this rare gem surfaced online after a fan requested it from Silverberg. He described the unopened box as a “priceless memento” he cherishes to this day. “I have the first copy on Windows 95 that came off the production line. I’ve kept very few mementos from my years at Microsoft. But I kept that one. Priceless,” wrote Silverberg.
The impact of Windows 95 can’t be overstated. It introduced the now-iconic Start menu and taskbar layout, along with the ability to run multiple applications simultaneously. Gamers of the era were treated to an impressive interface, and Windows 95 played a major role in boosting PC sales, 32-bit software adoption, and the overall PC gaming experience.
